Dysport wrinkle treatment is one of the most popular cosmetic injectables and has a place in just about everyone’s treatment plan.
A Brief History of Dysport
Dysport and its close, American-formulated relative, Botox, were created through the discovery of the botulinum A neurotoxin.
Several decades ago, scientists were studying the use of neurotoxins in eliminating muscle spasms. During these experiments, they noticed that neurotoxin injections helped smooth skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Since then, neurotoxin botulinum A has been purified and harnessed into the form of injections to help achieve aesthetic treatment goals.
Dysport itself was first manufactured by a French company in the UK in the early 90s. It made its way to the United States and became FDA-approved to treat glabellar lines on April 29th, 2009.
Neurotoxins like Dysport work by interfering with the communicative transmissions between your brain and your muscles.
How Dysport Works
Because the main active ingredient in Dysport is a neurotoxin, Dysport works by temporarily paralyzing your muscles to help freeze and smooth away dynamic wrinkles.
Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear as a result of dynamic facial expressions. For example, if you knit your brows in concentration or frustration, you’ll notice glabellar lines appear between your eyebrows. If, when you relax, those lines go away, then that’s an example of a dynamic wrinkle.
In contrast, dynamic wrinkles are not the same as wrinkles that appear as a result of collagen loss, which happens as you age. Loss of collagen results in thinner, weaker skin with reduced elasticity.
Dysport is an excellent treatment option to treat dynamic wrinkles on larger surface areas, such as the forehead. This is because Dysport is formulated for a controlled spread, compared to Botox, which stays localized at the injection site.
Although every patient’s body is different, in general, Dysport and Botox will be used in conjunction to treat different areas. For example, we may recommend injecting units of Dysport into your forehead and units of Botox around your eyes in the same session.
When You Should Get Dysport
If you have tried cosmetic injectables like dermal fillers before but still have deep, visible forehead wrinkles, Dysport can help.
Dysport has an excellent reputation for treating glabellar lines, otherwise known as frown lines. These are the lined wrinkles that primarily affect the glabella area, which is between your eyebrows.
Glabellar lines extend vertically toward the forehead, which is why they’re sometimes known as number 11 lines.
These lines naturally occur in everyone. However, over time, as your skin loses its collagen and elastin stores responsible for elasticity, these lines become prominent even during relaxed facial expressions.
Is Dysport Permanent?
Dysport is not a permanent treatment. After three to four months, your body breaks down and absorbs the Dysport ingredients, which reduces the treatment effects of Dysport.
However, if you are disciplined with receiving consistent treatment, you may be able to extend the period of time between treatments. This is because your muscles weaken from not being used, and you gradually start to use them less and less.
How Often Should You Get Treatment?
On average, patients get Dysport treatment every three to four months. Medical experts recommend waiting at least 90 days between treatments to give your body time to absorb the biodegradable neurotoxin.
Preparing for Dysport
During your consultation, our medical team will provide you with extensive information about what to expect before, during, and after your Dysport wrinkle treatment session.
When preparing for your Dysport treatment, you should avoid anti-inflammatory medicines like aspirin in the days leading up to treatment. We can recommend an alternative medication during your consultation. We may ask you to avoid other substances that can thin your blood, such as alcohol.
If you usually wear a full face of makeup, try going au naturel on the day of treatment. We will clean the injection site with an antiseptic prior to the procedure, which will remove makeup from the location. You can apply makeup immediately following your procedure.
What Happens During Treatment?
Dysport wrinkle treatment is done entirely at our office in Tampa, FL. In most cases, you’ll be in and out of the office within thirty minutes.
We will apply a mild anesthetic during the actual treatment to help increase your comfort during the procedure. Then, we’ll inject the units of Dysport into the treatment sites.
What Happens After Dysport Wrinkle Treatment?
After treatment, you can immediately resume your day. There is no required downtime with Dysport. Our team will give you more information about aftercare, but most patients do not have to avoid the sun, makeup, or favorite skincare products.
Dysport vs. Other Cosmetic Injectables
Dysport is a neurotoxin similar to Botox. It paralyzes your muscles, effectively reducing or completely eliminating the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.
Other cosmetic injectables, such as dermal fillers, are volumizing treatments. Dermal fillers help restore lost volume around your face from collagen and elastin depletion.
Both types of cosmetic injectables have space in your treatment plan. You don’t have to choose just one or the other. For example, you may receive Dysport to treat frown lines, and in the same session, receive dermal filler to help augment your lips.
