The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states there are more than 2.6 million lip filler injections performed in the United States each year. Lip augmentation with fillers can allow you to get the kind of lips you want without undergoing surgery or other invasive procedures, making it one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the country.
At BevelUp, we offer hyaluronic acid lip fillers like Juvéderm to help you achieve the look you want. Read more about lip augmentation and what fillers can offer.
What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler applied to the lips to increase their volume. Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient in lip fillers. This acid is present in your body naturally. It is a carbohydrate that binds to water, and the synthetic version of it we use in our lip fillers can keep the injection site looking plump and hydrated.
There are many reasons people get lip fillers, including wanting to:
- Restore previous lip volume
- Smooth lip lines
- Correct lip shape
As you age, your lips can start to lose their volume, with genetics and even sun damage playing a part in how this volume loss progresses. Although lip fillers like Juvéderm do not stop the aging process, they can allow you to enhance your lips’ shape and size without resorting to more invasive lip augmentation procedures like lip lifts or lip implants.
The right candidates for lip fillers are people who are in good overall health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations of their lip filler results. If you have an active oral infection, uncontrolled diabetes, blood diseases, or chronic cold sores, we will look for an alternative treatment.
What Are the Benefits of Lip Fillers?
Unlike other lip augmentation procedures, lip fillers do not require a long recovery time. In fact, there is no downtime at all to worry about, so you can get the fillers on your lunch break and return to work right after.
Lip fillers allow us to offer a precise amount of volume to your lips. They offer the control we need to be able to give you natural results that suit your facial structure.
Another benefit that lip fillers offer is that they are not permanent. If you decide fuller lips don’t suit you, you don’t have to worry about finding a way to reverse the results.
Lip fillers are also a more affordable treatment option than undergoing a full lip lift or a lip implant.
How to Prepare for Lip Fillers
We always want to have a consultation with our clients before any procedure. During this consultation, we will evaluate your lips to see whether you will benefit from lip fillers. We will also get your full medical history and ask you some questions about why you want to get lip fillers and what your expectations are.
We will also take into consideration your facial shape and structure to be able to offer the right amount of filler for the results you want. Tell us about any medications you take, including herbal supplements, and about any allergies you have.
During the consultation, we will also take photos of your face so that we can offer you before and after comparisons.
If you want, you can bring a photo of what you would like your lips to look like.
To prepare for the injections, you should not schedule any dental procedures for at least two weeks before your session. For one week before the injections, avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin and ibuprofen. You should also avoid supplements that contain omega-3s, vitamin E, ginseng, St. John’s wort, and ginger.
Avoid alcoholic beverages for at least a week as well.
Two days before the injections, stop using anti-aging products containing glycolic acid, retinol, and other exfoliating agents. Do not shave, pluck, or tweeze the treatment area.
Procedure and Aftercare
On the day of the injections, come with your face clean, without any makeup, and without applying lotions, moisturizers, or even sunscreen.
We will apply a topical numbing cream to your lips and wait for it to take effect. Once your lips are numb, we will begin the injections. The entire procedure can take as little as 30 minutes.
We will apply an ice pack and encourage you to keep using it throughout the day. For a few hours after the injections, avoid touching, massaging, or rubbing your lips. Steer clear of vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours. You should avoid alcohol and blood thinners for 24 to 48 hours, as well.
Avoid hot tubs, saunas, direct sun, or anything else that provides intense heat for that first day. After about two hours, you can gently apply makeup.
You can expect to see an improvement in your lip shape almost immediately, though you may have to wait a week to see the full results. Most people benefit from these results for 12 to 18 months.
